Nobel Peace Prize Awarded To Jailed Iranian Activist Narges Mohammadi

Narges Mohammadi, an imprisoned Iranian human rights activist, was awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her role in fighting for women’s rights in her home country, a year after Iran was roiled in nationwide protests against the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody.

Key Facts

The Nobel Committee praised Mohammadi for her “fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.”

The committee also highlighted the harsh treatment Mohammadi has received from Iran’s leaders, including 13 arrests, five convictions, a 31-year prison sentence and 154 lashes.

This is a developing story.
