Phoenix-based commercial contractor Chanen Construction has appointed Dean Howard as vice president of business development to help lead the newly merged company, the firm announced in an Oct. 9 news release shared with Construction Dive.
The company was acquired last year by Helena, Montana-based Dick Anderson Construction, which said the purchase would help it to expand outside of its home region and into commercial, industrial and infrastructure segments in Phoenix and the Southwest.

In this role, Howard will work closely with Steve Chanen, president and CEO of Chanen, and Marty Schuma, president and CEO of Dick Anderson, to help unify the building expertise of the two firms, per the release. Chanen will continue to build commercial projects and work on the continued buildout of Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Illinois, including classroom and lab spaces and the Phoenix Theatre expansion, which entails a new 500-seat building and other facilities.
“I’m excited at the opportunity to utilize my relationships and unique skill set to be a part of continuing to build Chanen’s multi-decade legacy as one of the premier builders in Arizona,” Howard said in the release.
Previously, Howard worked as director of business development at Sacramento, California-based Alston Construction, as vice president of business development at Mount Laurel, New Jersey-headquartered contractor Hill International and as business development manager at Rosendin Electric, based in San Jose, California, according to his LinkedIn.
Before his 25 years in the construction industry, Howard worked as a lobbyist in public affairs and for the city of Phoenix and the city of Goodyear, Arizona, in various roles, including economic development and finance, according to the release. He has a bachelor’s degree in business management from Arizona State University, per LinkedIn.
