Doncic Active And Lively Questionable As Mavericks Overcome Injuries

Injuries have been taking their toll on the Dallas Mavericks. Forward Maxi Kleber has missed significant time with a dislocated small right toe, rookie center Dereck Lively II has missed one game with a lower back contusion and Luka Doncic injured his left thumb in his last game.

Dallas is weathering the storm, however. The injuries to Lively and Doncic aren’t as severe as they appeared when they first happened. Lively could suit up again as soon as Tuesday night against the Houston Rockets, while Doncic will be active.

“Lively went through practice today,” Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd told reporters Monday afternoon. “He was good. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow. We’ll list [him] as questionable. Luka — x-rays during the game were negative. MRI performed here in Dallas confirmed a left thumb sprain, but he practiced and will be available tomorrow.”

Doncic’s availability is good news for the Mavericks as he averages the third most points per game in the NBA with 30.5. He played through the thumb injury after his hand made contact with James Harden’s knee in the opening minutes of Saturday’s loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

“It’s my thumb,” Doncic said after the game. “I can show you the picture later. You don’t want to see it.”

Lively’s questionable tag is also a noticeable improvement, considering the nature of his injury. He took a significant fall after missing an alley-oop attempt against the Los Angeles Lakers the day before Thanksgiving, remaining on the floor before being helped to the locker room.

The Mavericks’ rookie big man has started all but one of the games he’s played this season. He is averaging 8.1 points, 7.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 blocks in 14 appearances.

As for Kleber, he remains out as he continues to rehabilitate the injury to his toe. He has missed Dallas’ last eight games.
