Client: Olympic and Paralympic Games and Team USA

AECOM will serve as the venue infrastructure partner for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games and Team USA, the Dallas-based contractor announced last week.

The firm will help deliver the venue infrastructure program for the 2028 Summer Games, which will feature more than 50 Olympic and Paralympic sports, about 800 events and over 15,000 athletes, per the release. It will mark the third time — following 1932 and 1984 — that Los Angeles has hosted the Olympic Games.

Infrastructure for the event will entail temporary venues and temporary overlays on existing permanent venues, in accordance with the organizers’ goals of making the games sustainable and cost-effective. The events will take place across multiple clusters and venue sites around the city, AECOM said.

AECOM’s scope of work includes infrastructure architecture, engineering, planning, program management and construction management services, according to the release. Its AECOM Hunt business will oversee the procurement process, cost estimating, scheduling and construction management of venue infrastructure.

The firm also provided technical and design support, cost estimation and sustainability and energy consulting for the LA 2024/LA28 Exploratory Committee, which assessed the viability of the city’s bid as a host for the Games.

“The Olympic and Paralympic Games unite the world through sport, and we are honored to contribute our expertise to help bring LA28’s vision to life,” said AECOM CEO Troy Rudd in the release.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has pledged to make the 2028 Olympics a “no-car” event, according to The Guardian. However, the plan will not require the construction of any additional transportation infrastructure beyond what the region is already building, according to AECOM’s project page.

This is not the first time the firm has helped execute a massive global sporting event. AECOM worked on the Olympics Games in London in 2012, Rio in 2016 and Tokyo in 2021, according to the release.
